Catholic bishop and Orthodox singer discuss materialism, scientific arguments for Christ, reunion

A Catholic bishop and Orthodox artist are asking believers and non-believers of all backgrounds to open their minds to a world that is more complex than meets the eye.

Bishop Robert Barron, the world’s most followed bishop outside the Vatican, held his second annual Wonder Conference focusing on the intersection between faith and science.

Fox News Digital sat down with the bishop and his guest speaker, Orthodox liturgical artist Jonathan Pageau, to talk about how people should have faith and science in their daily lives.

“People are victims of indoctrination,” Barron told Fox News Digital about the growing culture of atheism in the Western world. “When it comes to materialism, materialism is not something science has to offer. Materialism is a philosophy. It’s a philosophical view, and it’s ultimately inconsistent. […] You cannot be a scientist and not believe, at least implicitly, in the invisible – that is, implicitly.”

Pageau feels the same way, telling Fox News Digital that one of the main goals of his work is to “try to break some of the ideas that people have” about what God is.

“What are we talking about when we talk about ‘God’?” He asked during the interview. “There are still people who think that God is actually a guy – an invisible guy who is only equal to all material reality. And that’s what the ancients talked about. that’s when they talk about gods.”

“Ultimately, the source of all truth is the supreme God,” Pageau continued, adding that he hopes his paintings and speeches “help people see that again.”

The Wonder 2024 conference, held this year at Barron’s hometown of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, focused on the theme of “Nature and the Human Body.”

This meeting started on Aug. 2 to 4 and boasted speakers from a variety of backgrounds, including physicists, pastors, sociologists, philosophers and computer scientists.

“The human body is at the heart of today’s most controversial topics, including evolution, artificial intelligence and gender stereotypes,” according to the editors of Wonder. “It’s more important than ever to be confident when talking to friends and family about these topics.”

In addition to the hundreds of Catholics who attended the meeting in person, the speeches and keynotes were broadcast online for free.

Pageau spoke at Wonder on Saturday in a talk titled “The Body as Symbol and Sign of the Body.”

The Orthodox liturgical expert has become famous for his YouTube series “The World of Symbols” – videos that explore the patterns of meaning and symbolism in Scripture with lectures such as “Sacrifice: The Paradox of Salvation” and “Ritualized Behavior from Animals to Church.”

Barron said he initially met Pageau through academic connections, including behavioral psychologist and publisher Dr. Jordan Peterson.

Barron and Pageau, despite their religious differences, teach the same complex and sophisticated concept of God that was established in the early Christian theologians – from the time when religious differences which was not yet among the believers.

It was Pageau’s way of interpreting the Scriptures that finally convinced Barron to work with an Orthodox speaker — a focus on early Christian leaders that Barron also recognized earlier in life. what he described as unsatisfactory catechism.

“It was [Pageau’s] a way of reading the Bible, which is very loving, based on the fathers of the Church. And I grew up with a logical approach to the Scriptures that was a spiritual dead end, basically. I finally got to meet the dads,” Barron told Fox News Digital.

He continued, “But when I heard Jonathan talk about them, I thought, ‘That’s right.

“The biggest difference, as far as I’m concerned, would be the papacy. That’s the main dividing line,” Barron said of their differing beliefs. “So there’s a theological aspect to it, to be sure, but it’s also a legal issue.”

And while both would love to see the Catholic Church and Orthodox Communion reunited after nearly 1,000 years of separation, neither wants such a reunion to happen quickly. or suddenly.

“I’m sitting here with Bishop Barron and I really like him, and I appreciate our conversation,” Pageau said. But I really hope so, at least in the short term [unification] it doesn’t happen. And I know that sounds awful at first, but I think we […] you have to be careful not to damage things. “

He continued, “If we are going to have a reunion, it has to be a true unity that heals the things that make us different. To make it happen, because of politics or … I think that it will cause a lot of chaos.

A pre-recorded interview between Barron and Pageau will now be broadcast on the bishop’s YouTube channel, in which the two delve into their theology and Christian witness.
