List of schools and businesses closed due to Tropical Storm Debby

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Below is a list of local schools and businesses that will be closed due to Tropical Storm Debby.

APPLING COUNTY:

Appling County School System officials say the school system will be closed for students and staff on Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6.

BACON COUNTY:

Bacon County Schools will be closed for students and staff on Monday, August 5th and Tuesday, August 6th.

BEAUFORT COUNTY:

BCSD continues to monitor potential weather conditions associated with Tropical Storm Debby. They say that even though it looks like they might need to postpone the first day of school they haven’t been there yet. BCSD says they will update students on Monday, August 5 with the final decision on the postponement.

BENEDICTINE MILITARY SCHOOL:

Benedictine has announced that Monday, August 5th will be a half day. Benedictine will close the campus at 3:00 pm They plan to have the same class through Wednesday, and possibly Thursday depending on storm conditions. They plan to start their studies on Friday.

BRYAN COUNTY:

Bryan County Schools will be closed on Monday, August 5th.

All sporting events and after-school activities will also be canceled on Monday. Staff will monitor the storm and make a decision to return to school on Tuesday at 1pm Monday.

BULLOCH COUNTY: Bulloch County Schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday for staff and students due to Tropical Storm Debby. All athletic and after-school games are also canceled. They will plan Wednesday’s schedule based on storm conditions. The Wednesday Project will be broadcast at 6:00 pm on Tuesday.

CHATHAM COUNTY:

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will have an early dismissal on Monday, August 5. The school system will be closed Tuesday, August 6 and Wednesday, August 7.

FIRST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY:

First Christian School in Richmond Hill will be closed on Monday, August 5.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY:

Georgia Southern University plans to curtail operations on Monday, Aug. 5 due to Tropical Storm Debby:

  • Monday, Aug. 5 at 12pm – Armstrong Campus in Savannah and Liberty Campus
  • Monday, Aug. 5 at 5pm – Statesboro Campus

The university plans to return to normal operations Thursday, Aug. 8 pending storm conditions.

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY:

The Jeff Davis County school system will be closed for students and staff on Monday, August 5th and Tuesday, August 6th.

LIBERTY COUNTY:

Liberty County will delay the first day of school until Thursday, August 8. All 12-month Liberty County School District employees and essential employees should report to work on Monday, August 5.

LONG COUNTY:

According to Long County Superintendent David Edwards, Long County Schools will delay the first day of school due to Tropical Storm Debby.

Edwards said the storm is expected to impact the area with heavy rains.

Long County schools will be closed until Thursday, August 8th.

Additional delays may occur due to road conditions, power outages and property damage.

Edwards said school and district offices will be closed until Wednesday.

MEMORIAL DAY SCHOOL AND CHILDREN’S SCHOOL:

Memorial Day School and Memorial Child Care Center are closed Monday-Wednesday. The first day of school is at 8:00 am on Thursday.

SAVANNAH TECH:

Savannah Tech classes will be canceled and campuses will be closed at 3pm on Monday, August 5th and will remain closed/cancelled on Tuesday, August 6th. immediate supervisor, may be required to report to work during this shutdown.

WAYNE’S PLACE:

Monday August 5th, all schools and offices will be closed. No administrative staff are required to report to work.

Tuesday, August 6: Weather permitting, and if travel is safe, district and school administrators should report to work. Further guidance will be provided by the supervisor.

Wednesday, August 7: Open House for all schools will be held from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM.

Thursday, August 8: First day of school for students.

Officials say this schedule is subject to change based on local road conditions, power outages, and potential damage to school property. Any necessary updates will be announced through our usual channels.

City of Children

Children’s Village in Richmond Hill will be closed on Monday, August 5.

BUSINESSES:

Chatham Area Transit: CAT plans to take all electric vehicles out of service until the storm passes.

They encourage passengers to turn on social media or text alerts for additional service changes.

Ralph H. Johnson VA Centers: In preparation for Tropical Storm Debby, the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System is currently operating on the following schedule Monday, August 5th through Thursday, August 8th. The VA Medical Center’s outpatient department and Emergency Department will remain open and operational.

The following are outpatient closures, with virtual care options available (as of August 4):

MASON’S STATUS, AUGUST 5:

  • Hinesville, GA VA Clinic – Closed
  • Savannah, GA VA Clinic – Closed
  • Beaufort VA Clinic – Closed

STANDARD FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 6:

  • Hinesville, GA VA Clinic – Closed
  • Savannah, GA VA Clinic – Closed
  • Beaufort VA Clinic – Closed

STANDARDS FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7:

  • Hinesville, GA VA Clinic – Open (Regular Operation)
  • Savannah, GA VA Clinic – Open (Regular Operation)
  • Beaufort VA Clinic – Open (Regular Operation)

STANDARD FOR THURSDAY, AUGUST 8:

  • Hinesville, GA VA Clinic – Open (Regular Operation)
  • Savannah, GA VA Clinic – Open (Regular Operation)
  • Beaufort VA Clinic – Open (Regular Operation)

Clinic staff are currently contacting patients during the curfew to provide actual care appointments or reschedule appointments.

Costal Health District: In preparation for Hurricane Debby all Coastal Health District clinics and offices plan to close at 12:00 pm on Monday, Aug. 5, and reopen at 8:00 am on Thursday, Aug. 8.

Branches in: Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh counties will be closed.

They are asking anyone who has a clinic appointment to schedule a future date.

WTOC will continue to update this list as more information becomes available.

Savannah city government offices: The city of Savannah will close all government offices on Tuesday. The city’s key emergency services will remain open during Tropical Storm Debby. Open services will include: safety, water and sewer, stormwater, parks and trees, and traffic engineering. These services will remain open weather permitting.

Offices will remain open on Monday and it is yet to be decided whether the office will be open on Wednesday.

The following City services will be affected on Tuesday, Aug. 6:

  • All non-emergency government offices will be closed.
  • Individual fees at the Coastal Georgia Center for use, taxes, licenses and other fees will be waived.
  • Night street cleaning services will be suspended.
  • Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Convenience Center will be closed.
  • Sewer lines will switch to a modified schedule on Wednesday.
  • The Court of Records will be closed.
  • Personal services and the Office of Special Events, Films and Tourism will be suspended.
  • Building closures, including all indoor facilities, will include City Hall, Community Center, Community Centers, Cultural Arts Center, Floyd Adams City Services Complex, Savannah Municipal Services Annex and Center of Savannah Business.
