India’s Vinesh Phogat is out of the gold medal fight vs. American after failure to make weight
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle event at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday after failing to make the weight, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said.
Phogat was set to lock horns with Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal.
“It is with regret that the Indian wrestler shares the news of Vinesh Phogat’s withdrawal from the women’s 50kg wrestling category,” the IOA said in a statement.
“Despite the team’s best efforts throughout the night, he weighed a few grams more than 50kg this morning.”
Disqualification means that Phogat will not receive the award.
United World Wrestling, the sport’s international governing body, has yet to issue a statement. – Reuters
