The pastor of St. Ignatius is on leave for ‘treatment of health issues;’ parishioners advised not to contact him

GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio – The pastor of St. Ignatius of Loyola in Green City, who oversees the state’s largest Catholic school, has been on leave since early July.

“Archbishop Schnurr asked Fr. Tom Mannebach, our pastor, takes time away from the parish to renew and grow in good coping skills, when faced with stressful situations. Time is up and it will happen in Michigan,” interim administrator Fr. Tom Bolte wrote in the parish’s July 14 newsletter.

Bolte wrote in subsequent newsletters that Mannebach was away “for medical treatment,” and urged parishioners not to email or text him.

“The program he is going to will last at least until August, maybe longer. It is very structured, so there is no discussion during the session. After the end he may return here as a pastor or take another assignment. Cards can be sent to the parish office, and you will receive them in due time,” Bolte wrote in the July 28 announcement.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati said Mannebach is “taking time to address health issues,” and referred WCPO to a July 3 letter from Bolte to the St. Ignatius, announcing his appointment as interim parish administrator.

Mannebach’s absence comes just weeks after the WCPO 9 I-Team interviewed former priest Tony Cutcher on June 7.

Cutcher resigned from the priesthood after the 2021 scandal at the Church of St. Peter in Huber Heights. The first stories were published on 9 and 10 July.

Cutcher and Mannebach attended Mount St. John’s Seminary. Mary’s & School of Theology together and both were appointed to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in 1999.

According to WCPO’s report on Cutcher, Fr. Barry Stechschulte resigned as pastor of St. Susanna Mason. More than 500 people have signed a petition for him to step down after a report showed he ordered the destruction of child pornography and waited six years to tell police when he was in a different parish.

Tony Cutcher spoke about his desire to return to active duty in an interview on June 7, 2024.

On July 30, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr appointed Fr. Jeff Kemper as interim manager of St. Susanna. A spokeswoman for the archdiocese declined to say where Stechschulte will work next.

Meanwhile, the main parish of St. This is the second pastor to take leave since 2019, with little notice given to parishioners.

At the end of July 2019, the archdiocese placed the then-St. Ignatius pastor Fr. With Geoff Drew on leave, many parishioners say they don’t know exactly what he was accused of doing.

On July 31, 2019, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr sent the members of the St. Ignatius announced in a letter that Drew will not return to the parish and is accused of conduct that violates the archdiocese Law on the Protection of Children.

Schnurr wrote that Drew will undergo a physical, psychological and spiritual evaluation at an independent outpatient treatment center and that he will consider evaluations and recommendations from experts to determine the next step in the investigation.

Weeks later, a Hamilton County grand jury indicted Drew for raping an altar boy in the late 1980s and early 1990s while working as a church music minister. in the parish of St. Jude in Bridgetown.

Drew pleaded guilty and is serving a 7-year prison sentence.

School of St. Ignatius has more than 1,100 students enrolled for the new school year, making it the largest Catholic school in Ohio, according to the July 14 parish.

Mannebach did not return a request for comment. He has been a pastor since July 2022, according to the St. Ignatius of Loyola Church.
